Caracterização morfológica e distribuição temporal de larvas e juvenis de Apareiodon affinis (Steindachner) (Osteichthyes, Parodontidae) no alto rio Paraná, Paraná Zoologia
Bialetzki,Andréa; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei; Baumgartner,Gilmar; Nakatani,Keshiyu.
With the purpose of characterizing morphologicaly the larvae and juveniles of Apareiodon affinis (Steindachner, 1879) and to verify their temporal distribution monthly samples were taken at Leopoldo's Inlet, upper Paraná River. The specimens were captured with a conic-cylindrical plankton net of mesh size 0,5mm from March 1991 to February 1992. Soon after identification, the specimens were separeted according to their development (prefle-xion, flexion, posflexion and juvenile) and then the moiphometric analyses were performed. The results showed that the larvae were captured from August 1991 to February 1992, with greatest densities in November 1991. The specimens occured in every timetable, however, larvae in pretlexion and flexion were captured during...

Changes in diet of a neotropical cichlid in response to river damming Biological Sciences
Jorge, Monica Bueno; Vilela, Maria José Alencar; Suarez, Yzel Rondon; Lima Junior, Sidnei Eduardo.
Changes in diet of Laetacara araguaiae Ottoni and Costa, 2009 were evaluated in the Sucuriú River (Upper Paraná basin, Brazil) in an area with a small hydroelectric power plant, both before and after the formation of the reservoir, in order to answer: Did the construction of the reservoir affected the diet of this species? The results showed greater change of diet composition in the upstream section of the reservoir. It was observed that before the formation of the reservoir and the first year after, the individuals from upstream section formed a group characterized by an insectivorous diet. With the dam construction and habitat change we observed that aquatic plant material, sediment, and algae predominated in the diet. These results show the...

Ecologia da ictiofauna de um córrego de cabeceira da bacia do alto rio Paraná, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lemes,Elis Mara; Garutti,Valdener.
Ecological studies were conducted in the ichthyofauna of Cedro, a small headwater stream located in a degraded area of State of São Paulo, Brazil, situated in the upper Paraná River basin. These are the results of two non-consecutive years observations and collections in two biotopes of that stream: a pool and a rapid. The ecological characteristics studied change in space and time. The present richness of species is high (21 species), nine of which are constant, six accessory and six accidental. The diversity is low (0.69 to 2.38), and the numeric predominance, from one to three species, occurred in both biotopes. The most frequent species are Poecilia reticulata (Peters, 1859) (28.1%), Corydoras cf. aeneus (Gill, 1858) (20.3%) and Hypostomus cf....

Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage in a tropical floodplain: effects of trophic, spatial and phylogenetic structures Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Edson Fontes; Goulart,Erivelto; Breda,Luciani; Minte-Vera,Carolina Viviana; Paiva,Luiz Ricardo de Souza; Vismara,Melina Rizzato.
Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage from the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, were described and evaluated according to trophic (guilds), spatial (habitats) and phylogenetic (taxonomic distances) structures. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Research Project (LTER-CNPq/UEM/NUPELIA) in August and October 2001. Thirty-five species were analyzed from thirty-one morphological variables. Strong significant correlations (Mantel test) between morphology and trophic guilds and between morphology and taxonomy were found, while morphology and habitat revealed a weak correlation. However, the partial Mantel test showed that the correlations between morphology and trophic guilds persist even when the effect of taxonomy is discounted....

Feeding of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Characidae): a post impoundment studies on Itaipu reservoir, upper Paraná River, PR BABT
Hahn,Norma Segatti; Delariva,Rosilene Luciana; Loureiro,Valdirene Esgarbosa.
With objective to know feeding spectrum of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Reinhardt, 1874), a middle size predator in different places of influence area of Itaipu reservoir, stomach contents were analyzed. Samples were collected from March 1984 to February 1989 from Itaipu Reservoir and its adjacent areas. Its fed mainly on fishes, but it was an opportunistic (consumed 17 species of prey). Despite of the wide feeding spectrum, few preys were dominant in the diet, according to the different habitats sampled. As a result, it significant spatial differences in the diet was observed. Was observed through "Detrented Correspondence Analysis" (DCA) these were divided into three groups in relation with diet: preys from upstream, with higher scores; preys from the...

Jarduli,Lucas Ribeiro; Garcia,Diego Azevedo Zoccal; Vidotto-Magnoni,Ana Paula; Casimiro,Armando Cesar Rodrigues; Vianna,Norberto Castro; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Jerep,Fernando Camargo; Orsi,Mario Luis.
Abstract: The Paranapanema River is an important, extensively explored tributary of the Upper Paraná River basin. The fish fauna of the Paranapanema River has been investigated since the 1990s; however, no study has characterized the richness of fish species throughout the basin, including the main channel of the river, marginal lagoons, its tributaries, and sub-tributaries. Thus, we performed a review with 90 independent studies conducted at the upper, middle, and lower sections of the basin. We recorded 225 species, of which 165 were native, and 60 were non-native. We found that 77% of the species within the basin are composed by Siluriformes and Characiformes. Cichliformes had a significant number of non-native species established in impoundment...

Inventory of the fish fauna from Ivaí River basin, Paraná State, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Frota,Augusto; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho; Petenucci,Letícia Machado; Graça,Weferson Júnio da.
Abstract We compiled data on fish fauna of the Ivaí River basin from recent specialised literature, standardised sampling and records of species deposited in fish collections. There were 118 fish species of eight orders and 29 families. Of these, 100 species are autochthonous (84.8%), 13, allochthonous (11.0%) and five, exotic (4.2%). The main causes for the occurrence of non-native species are escapes from aquaculture, introduction for fishing purposes and the construction of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. The predominance of small and medium-sized Characiformes and Siluriformes, including 13 species new to science, accounts for approximately 11.0% of all species and 13.0% of all native species. About 10.2% of all species and 12.0% of all native species...

Larvae of migratory fish (Teleostei: Ostariophysi) in the lotic remnant of the Paraná River in Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Barzotto,Evelyn; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei; Bialetzki,Andréa; Orvati,Lilian; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
ABSTRACT Fish larvae and adults are morphologically distinct from each other and have different ecological requirements. Research on the dynamics of ichthyoplankton provides valuable information about the early stages of the life cycle of fish. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution of the larval stages of three migratory species - Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816), Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Agassiz, 1829) - to identify possible spawning areas in the last lotic remnant of the upper Paraná River, in the Brazilian territory. A total of 26 points were sampled monthly from October 2003 to November 2004. The PERMANOVA detected significant differences between the months only for S....

Longitudinal distribution of the ichthyofauna in a tributary of Tietê River with sources on the Basaltic Cuestas of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cardoso,Rodrigo Torres; Oliveira,Alexandre Kannebley de; Garavello,Julio Cesar.
This work aimed to study the composition and distribution of fish species at four sites along Cabeça River, an affluent of Corumbataí River, tributary of Tietê River, intending to better understand the influence of local geomorphology on the occurrence of the species along the river. Using gill nets, trawl net, cast net and sieves, five samples were taken from each site every two months. These data were analyzed from constancy of occurrence, similarity index of Jaccard, rarefaction analysis and descriptive statistical analysis of richness. 4,532 fish individuals belonging to six different orders, 17 families and 65 species were captured. Differences in composition, richness (diversity), abundance and frequency were observed at these sites along the river....
